Researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ICS-ULisboa) at SHIFT – Environment, Territory and Society and lecturer in the PhD in Sustainability Sciences at the University of Lisbon; Coordinator of the ICS Food-Hub.
My research seeks to respond to societal challenges, such as climate emergency, food planning, biodiversity loss, ecological connectivity, through transformative processes and nature-based solutions that integrate science, public policy and action, with positive impact on human well-being, economy, environmental quality and landscape.
Keith Pezzoli
Professor, UC San Diego, USA
Keith Pezzoli, PhD., is a Senior Teaching Professor at the University of California, San Diego where he directs the Bioregional Center for Sustainability Science, Planning and Design. Pezzoli’s team- based, community-engaged teaching, research, and learning lies at nexus of three intersecting challenges: (1) Transitioning to Climate-Friendly, Resilient and Regenerative Development — by coupling human and natural systems in planning, design, and development at the local and bioregional scale; (2) Democratizing Science, Policy-making, and Planning — by establishing trusted community-university partnerships and projects that propagate bi-directional flows of knowledge, learning, and resources–among students, researchers, and diverse community participants–in equitable, inclusive, and demos-strengthening ways. And (3) Fostering Equity in Information and Communication Technologies — by bridging the digital divide between universities and underserved communities in matters of public concern and justice. This includes creating new means of cyber-social connectivity for well-informed participatory planning; effective research communication using data visualization and storytelling; and inclusive decision-making processes that are equitable and diverse.
Joe Ravetz
Professor, University of Manchester, UK
My work on ‘collective bio-regional intelligence’ covers urban, environment, economy, technology and political systems, as leader of the Future-Proof Cities theme for the Urban Institute at the University of Manchester.
I have produced 2 landmark texts – the new ‘Deeper City: collective intelligence and the pathways from smart to wise’, and the previous ‘City-region 2020: Integrated planning for a sustainable environment’. I provide advice for policy and business from SAMI Consulting, along with reviews, evaluations, keynotes, training and capacity building in many countries.
I practice and promote visual thinking as the key to creative collaboration, foresight/futures and systems change. In 2020 I set up the Collaboratorium for collective intelligence, a global online community, exploring the pathways ‘from smart to wise’.
